The Booming UWB Market
Why the UWB market?
Information of people and asset locations is critical information.
GPS is the technology that allows one to know one’s position outdoors, and this technology has become somewhat solidified its status. Vehicle navigation and road-finding services, which people frequently use, are typical examples of this technology.
However, indoor positioning requires a different technique because of the closed environment where GPS signals are difficult to receive. UWB technology utilized enables customers using existing RTLS to improve efficiency, shorten lead time and reduce costs by switching from Wi-Fi and RFID to UWB with high position accuracy.
UWB is the abbreviation of Ultra Wide Band, which means ultra-wideband short-range wireless communication technology. UWB is a next-generation wireless technology that uses a very wide frequency bandwidth and is applied to communications and radars. Low-power, short-distance, high-bandwidth communications enable highly accurate spatial and orientation data collection. Unlike band RF technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, sending a signal over a wide frequency range means using narrow pulses in the time domain.
UWB continues to be used for consumer and enterprise technologies, UWB-capable chips will be embedded in more devices such as smartphones, wearables and cars, and indoor spaces will start introducing UWB infrastructure for a variety of position-based applications.
UWB technology will become increasingly popular in both mass and enterprise markets.
How Does Ultra-Wideband (UWB)
Positioning Work?
There are various methods for indoor positioning algorithms.
Each method has its pros and cons, and the most commonly used algorithms are as follows:
TWR(Two-way-ranging)
TDoA (Time Difference of Arrival)
AoA(Angle of Arrival)
